Indian badminton star Ayush Shetty has officially sealed a medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, after defeating Indonesia's Jonatan Christie, the world No. 4 and third seed, 23-21, 21-17 in the quarterfinals on Friday. It is India's first medal at this tournament since Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the men's doubles gold in 2023 and the first by an Indian men's singles player since HS Prannoy's medal in 2018. This was Shetty's first career win over Christie in their maiden head-to-head meeting. A product of the Centre of Badminton Excellence, formerly the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, the young Indian has not dropped a single game throughout the entire tournament. That is a miraculous run of form against some of the best shuttlers in Asia.
How The Match Took Place
The first game was tightly contested from the opening rally. Christie led 11-10 at the break and extended his advantage to 18-15 after resumption, even earning a game point. At that stage, the match looked to be heading Christie's way. Shetty had other ideas, he clawed his way back, forced the score to deuce and eventually took the opener 23-21 in a finish that swung back and forth until the very last point. The second game was equally hard-fought. Shetty carried an 11-9 lead into the interval and gradually tightened his grip from there, closing it out 21-17 to book his place in the semifinals. The composure he showed after Christie's mid-game surge in the first set, from 15-18 down, was the clearest sign of a player who belongs at this level.
The Road To The Semis
Apart from Friday's win, Shetty's tournament has been a series of upsets. He opened his campaign by stunning world No. 7 Li Shi Feng of China, the reigning Asian Games champion and former All England champion in the first round. He followed that with a win over Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei in the second round to reach the quarterfinals. The Indian star has played three matches and has three wins, zero games dropped.
In the semifinals taking place on Saturday at 9:00 am IST, Ayush Shetty will be facing Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the Paris 2024 silver medallist and current world No. 1 and it is going to be a pretty massive step up in challenge, but given what he has already produced this week, Shetty goes in with genuine belief.
On the other hand, the broader India story from this tournament is mixed. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu exited in the second round, while Lakshya Sen went out in the opening round. Shetty's run has been the single bright spot and a significant one at that. Moreover, for Indian badminton fans, a semifinal appearance at the Asia Championships by a young men's singles player is exactly the kind of result the sport needs right now. The medal is already confirmed. Whether it is bronze or better depends on what Shetty produces on Saturday.
