Mumbai Indians have had a rather far from ideal start to their 2026 IPL campaign. Moreover, their star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has also been in a surprisingly bad form. Having built his reputation over the years for delivering on the big occasions. Bumrah is shockingly still searching for his first wicket after five matches.
Mumbai Indians kicked off this year’s IPL with a convincing win over Kolkata Knight Riders. However, since then, they lost to Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and most recently, against Punjab Kings. With four losses in a row, they sit on the ninth position and its safe to say that the pressure is starting to build on the team.
A deeper look at Jaspirat Bumrah’s IPL season so far
Looking at the numbers, Jasprit Bumrah stands out. In five matches so far, he has conceded 164 runs and has failed to take a wicket as mentioned earlier. He has been operating at an economy rate of 8.63 and in the game against Punjab Kings, he finished with 41 runs conceded. This only added to the conversation around his form.
It is worth noting that the situation is not as straightforward as it might seem. Teams have chosen not to take risks against him and have focused on scoring off other bowlers. Without early breakthroughs from the rest of the attack, Bumrah has often been brought on when the batsmen are already set which makes it harder to take wickets.
Despite his slump, Head coach Mahela Jayawardene has backed his star pacer. He pointed out that lack of of pressure in the powerplay has allowed the teams to play comfortably. This reduces the need to attack someone like Bumrah.
There have also been so problems in the Mumbai Indians squad due to injuries and illness. The same has made it more difficult to be consistent. Despite this, the belief is that once Bumrah gets his first wicket of the season, the momentum would shift quickly. Apart from Bumrah, the Mumbai Indians also need to quickly figure out a way to get back on winning terms.
The upcoming features carry a lot of importance considering they have won just one game out of their five played. They will face Gujarat Titans on April 20 and then Chennai Super Kings on April 23. These matches will most certainly play a crucial role in shaping the team’s campaign for the rest of the season.
