For the first time in IPL history, all 10 captains at the start of the tournament are Indian. The reason is pretty simple, as most of you would know, Australian Captain, Pat Cummins, the only overseas skipper from last season, is recovering from a back injury and will miss the opening games of IPL 2026. This has never happened before. Every previous season has had at least one foreign captain in the mix. Faf du Plessis led RCB in 2023 and 2024, David Warner captained Delhi Capitals in 2023 and Cummins himself led SRH to the final in IPL 2024.

But for at least the first half of IPL 2026, the leadership across all ten franchises is entirely homegrown. Ishan Kishan steps in as SRH's stand-in captain in Cummins's unavailability, with Abhishek Sharma as his deputy. Kishan is no stranger to leadership, he guided Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2025-26. Still, leading an SRH side built around aggression is definitely going to be a different challenge altogether.

Ruturaj Gaikwad returns to lead Chennai Super Kings after missing most of IPL 2025 with an elbow injury. CSK have failed to make it to the playoffs in both 2024 and 2025 under his watch, so the pressure is real this time around. Ajinkya Rahane continues at Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders despite a below-par 2025 campaign. KKR are backing him again, which says more about the lack of alternatives than anything else. Hardik Pandya is back for his third consecutive season as Mumbai Indians captain, still chasing that first title in his second stint at the helm.

Rishabh Pant, signed for Rs 27 crore, leads Sanjeev Goenka's Lucknow Super Giants into 2026 after winning just 6 matches last season. Shreyas Iyer carries genuine momentum into PBKS's campaign after taking them to the final last year, he also won the title with KKR in 2024.

Rajat Patidar leads RCB as defending champions, with Virat Kohli still in the squad. Axar Patel continues as Delhi Capitals skipper, while Shubman Gill takes charge of Gujarat Titans fresh off his appointment as India's Test and ODI captain. Riyan Parag inherits the Rajasthan Royals armband after Sanju Samson's exit, Parag has been at the franchise since 2019 and has prior experience as interim skipper.

As for Cummins, he has arrived in India and confirmed he is closing in on full fitness. "I'm still recovering from a back injury, but it's good. I'm back bowling in the nets," the Australian captain said on the Business of Sport podcast. As per latest reports, the Oz fast bowler is most likely to take over SRH's captaincy after approximately 7 matches into their campaign. So the all-Indian captaincy record will be short-lived, but for the first few weeks of IPL 2026, it is a genuine first.
