Bernardo Silva has confirmed he will leave Manchester City FC at the end of the season, bringing an end to a nine-year spell that saw him become one of the defining figures of the club’s most successful era. The 31-year-old midfielder, whose contract expires in June, announced his decision on April 16 through a message to fans, signalling the close of a chapter that began when he joined from AS Monaco FC in 2017.
Over the years, Silva established himself as one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players. His versatility, work rate and ability to adapt to different roles made him a constant presence in the side. He leaves the club with 451 appearances and 19 major trophies, placing him among the most decorated players in City’s history.
In an emotional farewell shared on social media, Silva reflected on his journey both on and off the pitch. “When I arrived nine years ago, I was following a dream,” he wrote. “This club gave me much more than I ever hoped for. What we achieved together is something I will always carry with me.”
He also spoke about the personal connections he built during his time in Manchester, calling it the place where he started his family. Addressing supporters directly, he added: “I arrived as a Man City player, I leave as one more of you, a supporter for life.”
Silva’s departure comes at a time when City are still competing on multiple fronts. Having taken on the captaincy role earlier in the season following the exit of Kevin De Bruyne, he has remained a key figure as the club continues its push for silverware. City are still in the Premier League title race and have an FA Cup semi-final ahead, giving Silva a chance to add to his tally before he leaves.
While his next destination has not yet been confirmed, the midfielder has been linked with a return to Benfica, along with interest from clubs across Spain and Italy. A move away from England appears likely, though no official decision has been made.
For Guardiola, Silva’s exit represents more than just the loss of a player. The City manager has often spoken about his admiration for the Portuguese midfielder, highlighting his intelligence and consistency over the years. “He can play in many positions, he understands the game and he is always available,” Guardiola said recently, underlining Silva’s importance to the squad.
As the season heads into its final weeks, Silva’s focus remains on finishing strongly. His departure marks the end of a significant era at Manchester City, closing the chapter on a player who quietly became one of the team’s most reliable and influential figures.
