Ajinkya Rahane does not lose his composure easily. But two consecutive defeats for Kolkata Knight Riders, the latest against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday and a relentless noise around his strike rate and suitability as an IPL opener, pushed the usually measured captain into unusually candid territory in the post-match press conference.  KKR have lost both their games this season. The batting unit has not clicked, the bowling has been inconsistent and the questions are already circling the captain. Rahane's strike rate in IPL 2026 has hovered around 150, his best return since 2023, but that has not been enough to quiet the debate around his role at the top of the order.

His scoring rate drops once the powerplay ends and fielding restrictions are lifted, and that pattern has invited scrutiny from all corners. Rahane started the post match press conference the way he usually does- calm, measured, "not too worried." But as the questions kept coming, something shifted. He pushed back. Hard.

"My strike rate, I have the best strike rate so far in 2023. People who are talking are probably not watching the game or have a certain agenda against me," Rahane said. "They don't like me playing. They don't like to watch me play. The amount of success I've got, I guess they're jealous about that."

No names were taken by the veteran India batter, but his frustration was quite clear. This is not the first time the KKR skipper has spoken out publicly about how his performances are being received. During the Ranji Trophy last season, he expressed frustration at the lack of communication from national selectors despite scoring heavily, a daddy hundred against Chhattisgarh among his contributions. He made it clear at the time that clarity about his future mattered to him. He eventually stepped back from the longer format towards the latter stages of the tournament, but showed his adaptability in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 391 runs for Mumbai at a strike rate of 161.57. The T20 game is clearly one he has worked hard on.

The IPL, though, operates on a different level of scrutiny. A week in, two defeats down and the margin for error is already shrinking. Rahane spoke about building a partnership with Finn Allen at the top and stressed the importance of fearless cricket in the first 6 overs, while accepting that struggles along the way are part of the process.

"I am happy they are talking about me, negative or positive. Let them talk. In the first six overs, you need to look to play fearless cricket with freedom. At times you will struggle, that's okay," he said. "I know what I'm doing, I know what I've done in the past and I back myself instead of thinking about what others are saying."

On the other hand, words only go so far. KKR need results and they need them quickly. Two losses from two games in the IPL is not a crisis yet, but another defeat will make it one. For Ajinkya Rahane, the only answer to the noise, the agendas, the critics, the strike rate debate  is runs and wins. Everything else is just talk.
