A viral clip of LSG-owner Goenka and Pant's post-match chat after LSG's loss to DC sparked a social media storm, forcing LSG to clarify while Lalit Modi called for a franchise ban.
Delhi Capitals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 6 wickets in Match 5 of IPL 2026 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 1, but the result was almost secondary by the time the evening ended. What followed the match, a visuals of LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka in an animated conversation with captain Rishabh Pant, took over social media entirely and forced the franchise into damage control mode within hours.
GMR and JSW-owned DC had restricted LSG to 141 after winning the toss and bowling first. The chase looked in serious trouble at 26 for 4, before Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs put together an unbeaten century partnership, Rizvi finished on 70 not out, Stubbs on 39 not out, to guide Delhi home with 17 balls to spare. A comprehensive win for DC. But the post-match visuals from the LSG camp became the bigger story.
The clip of Goenka and Pant drew immediate comparisons to the infamous exchange between Goenka and KL Rahul from a previous season, an episode that had generated a massive controversy at the time. The optics were bad. Speculation about a rift between the captain and the franchise ownership spread quickly and by Thursday morning it had become one of the most discussed topics in India after the LPG shortage, of course.
LSG's Clarification And The Fallout
The Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise posted a video on X with the caption-- "Not everything you see is the true story. Here's the unfiltered post-match vibes, when cameras don't cut." In the video, Goenka and Pant are seen sharing a laugh during what appeared to be the same post-match meeting. The franchise's intent was clear, reframe the narrative before it spiralled further.
Some fans on X (previously Twitter) questioned whether the video was filmed at a different time altogether. On the other hand, one fan pointed out that a post-match presentation was visible on the giant screen inside the stadium in the background of the clarification clip, which would place it at roughly the same time as the original footage.
The cricketing world, however, was not absolutely convinced. Former English captain and popular commentator Michael Vaughan said publicly there was "no need for this" after just the first game of the tournament. Furthermore, Lalit Modi, the founder and first commissioner of the IPL, went really further. Lalit Modi quoted Vaughan's post on X and wrote that he was "embarrassed" by Goenka's behaviour, adding that had he still been chairman and commissioner, he would have "banned him immediately and made him forfeit his ownership of the team forever." Modi also claimed there is a specific clause in the IPL franchise agreement that covers exactly this kind of conduct and posted a second tweet calling it a "material breach" that could only be resolved by a global ban and the removal of the franchise.
Those are serious words from the man who built the league. Whether the BCCI takes any action remains to be seen. For now, LSG have a bigger problem than the optics, they have lost their opening game and the noise around the franchise is already louder than anyone at the club would have wanted this early in the season. Pant, for his part, has said nothing publicly. Sometimes silence is the clearest statement of all.
