Punjab Kings won their IPL 2026 opener against Gujarat Titans by 3 wickets in New Chandigarh on Tuesday, but the celebrations in the dressing room came with an unwanted footnote. Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match, the first such penalty handed out in IPL 2026. Punjab got the two points, but Iyer personally paid the price for his side's sluggish over progression. It is the kind of start no captain wants, especially when the team has just won.

Why Was Iyer Fined?

The penalty falls under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which covers minimum over-rate offences. Since it was Punjab's first violation of the season, the fine stood at Rs 12 lakh. Had it been a repeat offence, Iyer could have been looking at a match suspension. Captains are directly accountable for their team's over-rate and the IPL has consistently enforced this rule regardless of match results. Last season, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Rajat Patidar, Riyan Parag and Hardik Pandya were all fined at various points for the same offence, so Iyer is far from alone in this particular club. The message from the IPL remains consistent: win or lose, the over-rate clock does not stop.

Punjab's Win Against GT

On the field, PBKS had a chase to forget before a 22-year-old Australian batter rescued them. Chasing 163, Punjab were cruising at 110 for 2 before Prasidh Krishna tore through the middle order with a 3-wicket burst, reducing them to 118 for 6 in the space of a few overs. The match had shifted completely. Gujarat had momentum, the crowd had gone quiet and Punjab's batting order was running out of options. Debutant Cooper Connolly did not flinch. The young Australian held his nerve, built crucial partnerships at the back end and finished unbeaten on 72 off 44 balls on his debut to guide Punjab home with 5 balls to spare. The Oz youngster was named Player of the Match on debut. Iyer, speaking after the game, said Connolly stayed "calm and composed" through the chaos and praised the qualty of his strokeplay, particularly against Rashid Khan. On debut, under that kind of pressure, it was as good an innings as Punjab could have asked for from an overseas player they are clearly banking on this season. Furthermore, the win gives PBKS a strong start to a season where Iyer will be looking to go one better than last year's final appearance. The fine is a minor distraction. The Connolly innings is the bigger story from Tuesday night.
