The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is underway, and as teams begin to find their rhythm, one question stands out: which side has the most balanced squad? Early signs suggest the Mumbai Indians (MI) are leading that conversation.

Unlike many franchises that reshuffled heavily during the mini auction, MI retained the core of their squad, focusing on continuity over overhaul. That stability is already paying dividends. They began their campaign with a commanding six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, successfully chasing a 220-plus target and breaking their long-standing opening-match jinx.

Even before the season began, several experts had identified MI as one of the most well-rounded teams and a strong playoff contender. At the heart of this balance are proven Indian stars. Captain Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Jasprit Bumrah bring proven match-winning ability. Bumrah, widely regarded as the world’s No. 1 bowler, leads an attack further strengthened by the return of Trent Boult, whose powerplay impact adds another dimension.

The batting unit looks equally solid. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton set the tone in the opening game, while Quinton de Kock and Sherfane Rutherford added depth and flexibility. Rutherford, who joined MI from Gujarat Titans for INR 2.6 crore, is one of the key additions alongside India allrounder Shardul Thakur.

Thakur, acquired from Lucknow Super Giants in an all-cash deal worth INR 2 crore, has already made an impact. In the opening match, he picked up three wickets while conceding 39 runs, proving his value in the middle overs. Alongside him, Deepak Chahar provides another reliable pace option, having consistently delivered for franchises over the years.

MI’s bowling attack is further balanced by a promising spin unit, featuring Mayank Markande and Afghan youngster AM Ghazanfar, giving the team options across conditions.

Statistically, MI’s strength lies in their all-round depth, having multiple players who can contribute with both bat and ball, a balance that allows flexibility in team combinations across conditions.

With this squad, Mumbai has been formidable, winning 51 out of 85 matches while losing 33 and playing one tie.

Other franchises like the Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans have also built well-rounded squads this season. However, MI appears to be a step ahead due to their experience and the familiarity within the group, especially after coming close to the title last year.

Having narrowly missed out last season after falling short in the second playoff, MI appear determined to go one step further this year. Their mix of experienced internationals and promising domestic talent provides both stability and bench strength.

As they prepare to face the Delhi Capitals on April 4 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Mumbai Indians look not just competitive, but complete. If early signs are anything to go by, they could well be the team to beat this season.
